Brecksville - March 12, 2016

We ventured back to Brecksville today to look for the Bald Eagles' nest. We saw that and much more!

Some mallards, doing their thing.

A soaring raptor, most likely a turkey vulture, based on its shape and size.

A red-tailed hawk, soaring over our path.

As we approached the nest, we noticed signs indicating the "Protection Zone"

And here it is! An active bald eagle nest!

A closer look

You can see its sheer size. Unfortunately, we didn't see any bald eagles near the nest.

A pileated woodpecker, only a few trees away from the bald eagle nest.

Two soaring birds of prey. They were moving so fast, we couldn't clearly identify them.

A new sighting for us! A male and female hooded merganser!

The female

The male

Here's a close up of the male hooded merganser. Check out that hood!

A little downy woodpecker.

An American mink! He was moving fast, and he ended up jumping into the river. He was the first mink we've spotted in the area.

Here's another very exciting identification for us. The rare red-headed woodpecker. These are considered "Near Threatened" species and we spotted several of them.

A closer look at the red-headed woodpecker.

Until next time!
